Prof. dr. em. Dirk Voorhoof lectured European Media and Information Law at Ghent University (1990-2016) and Copenhagen University (2003-2017). He reports on developments regarding freedom of expression, media and journalism in Europe. He is co-founder and member of the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) and of Legal Human Academy. From 2002-2007 he lectured at the University of Oxford, MLAP (Global Media Law Advocates Programme) and since 2017 he is a guest professor at Luxembourg University in the master programme on Space, Telecommunications and Media Law.
He was a member of the Federal Commission for Access to Administrative Documents in Belgium, of the Flemish Media Council and of the Flemish Media Regulator (VRM). He was also member of the Committee of Experts on Internet Intermediaries (MSI-NET) of the Council of Europe (2016-2018), and of the Expert Committee on SLAPPs (
MSI-SLP, 2022-2024). He is active in the JUFREX-pool of experts (Council of Europe/EU) and he is a member of the Global FOE&I @Columbia experts network, New York. He is a member of the Human Rights Centre at Ghent University and of CASE, the coalition against SLAPPs in Europe and he is the chairman of the Belgian anti-SLAPP working group (
www.slapp.be).
Together with Tarlach McGonagle (UvA) he wrote and updates the
free online e-book Freedom of Expression, the Media and Journalists: Case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and he regularly reports on the caselaw by the ECtHR on freedom of expression in the legal newsletter IRIS-online, likewise the e- book also published by the European Audiovisual Observatory.
